LGBTQ+ Affirmative Counselling Handbook 2025

The five themes covered here include 1) Affirmative Counselling, 2) Intimate Partner Violence, 3) Working with Transgender & Gender Diversity Cases, 4) Anti-Gender and Sexuality Schoool-Based Bullying, and 5) Gay men and Chemsex. Each section consists of three core elements: background, expert perspectives, and community voices. All themes were born from deep conversations with frontline practitioners. These discussions highlighted issues within the mental health profession that demand our urgent attention. This handbook bridges the divide between academic knowledge and on-the-ground reality by offering support that is both scientifically grounded and practically useful. We believe that affirmative care only lands and touches hearts when it integrates theory, clinical wisdom, and lived experience.

Hong Kong LGBTQ+ Community Mental Health Report 2025

Epidemiological studies around the world have shown that LGBTQ+ populations experience higher rates of depression and anxiety compared to their cisgender heterosexual counterparts (Pinna et al., 2022; Wittgens et al., 2022). In 2017, Prof. Randolph Chan and Prof. Winnie Mak from the Chinese University of Hong Kong surveyed 1,050 LGBTQ+ individuals to assess their mental health. They found that 30.9% showed moderate to severe depression symptoms, and 25.9% reported moderate to severe anxiety symptoms (Chan & Mak, 2018).

Seven years later, has the mental health of the local LGBTQ+ community improved?

LGB Counselling Handbook

This manual is divided into three sections: a self-assessment questionnaire for practitioners, an introduction to LGB-affirmative counseling, and essential knowledge and community resources regarding sexual minorities in Hong Kong. With authorization from international scholars, we have included a validated assessment tool alongside several case worksheets focused on minority stress. We have also designed a “Quick-Reference Bookmark” highlighting the core principles of LGB-affirmative counseling to support practitioners in their clinical practice.

2022 Research Report on Sexual Orientation Change Efforts in Hong Kong

Sexual orientation change efforts (SOCE) refer to practices that aim to manage, suppress or eliminate same-sex attraction, and by doing so foster an attraction towards the opposite-sex. Despite the ineffectiveness of SOCE in changing one’s sexual orientation and its devastating psychological conseqeunces as demonstrated by an enormous amount of evidence, a substantial proportion of sexual minorities still has experienced or is currently taking SOCE nowadays. The Society of True Light collaborated with Dr. Randolph Chun-Ho Chan and collected quantitative data and case studies to investigate the experience and impacts of SOCE on the sexual minorities in Hong Kong.
